I just saw this band on Austin City Limits yesterday and was floored when Brittany Howard opened her mouth. I sure didn't expect that sound to come out. She's got such passion and a unique style. Yes, I can see how people would be reminded of Janis Joplin, but to me I see Etta James and more of the blues singers.
Like you, I REALLY want to see this band live and I can't say that about many bands these days. I've even searched their tour schedule to see if it's doable!
I hear you about Etta, but it was Etta that I heard in Joplin. I'm a HUGE music enthusiast and love classic rock -- big time Robert Plant fan here! And believe it or not, I don't care too much for blues itself but, interestingly enough, all the rock bands I love (Led Zeppelin, Tom Petty, Rolling Stones, Black Crows, etc) are heavily blues-influenced. Go figure!
Ya know, I've been hearing about AS for a little while now, but I didn't give them a second thought, solely because the sources were all commercial-based music outlets and me being the music snob that I am, I dismissed them. Shame on me!
I'm kinda salty I missed them on ACL, but now I'll be sure to look out for the reruns. And yes, I checked their touring schedule as well, but unfortunately Chicago isn't on the list. :-( I will be waiting patiently. Thanks again!
You can catch the Alabama Shakes performance on Austin City Limits on the PBS website.
I also remember hearing about Alabama Shakes, but only saw a photo. I did think the combination of people was interesting but my curiosity didn't go beyond that. But after hearing them, well, I am a HUGE fan.
Yes, I hear you about the rock/blues thing. Brittany H. does seem to come from that line of blues-influence rockers. But I also hear she does justice to some R&B as well.
I'm surprised that Chicago isn't on their touring list! I may have to catch them in my home state of Delaware (on the list), or patiently wait for them to reach North Carolina.

Brittany Howard's voice is Janis Joplin-esque, but better IMO. I hope to see them live one day. Thanks for that!

Hold On ! Bad! Dad
"Bad" is the word! Of course in a GOOD way. She's somethin' else. I hear Nina, Etta, Billie, Janis, Koko, on and on. Gotta get this one.
