Robert and Mary

I just faxed my high school diploma somewhere and I noticed that they have my parents listed as "Robert and Mary Benjamin."  Why do people always translate my dad's name to Robert? It's just plain old "Bobby." That's what his mama named him.

i agree about people assuming a person's name. names are sacred and just as pronouncing one's name correctly is important so is not assuming nicknames. i had to correct people many time about my daughter's name (Salimu). as a child people wanted to call her sally moo or moo moo. as an adult most of her associates prefer to call her ariel which is her middle name. my cometic name is sernuaaba and have to correct those who call me sara.

Darlene,

I agree. Pronouncing a person's name is of utmost importance -- as is the spelling of names. I too have had to correct people when pronouncing my name. It's painful when someone says it wrong. Many Americans will mangle the spelling and pronunciation of International names -- especially African names. I have had to correct the spelling of many African names when proofreading material.
