Music to Grow Up To

Who are some of the special musicians your parents introduced you to? Here are artists that my parents listened to when I was growing up:

Nina Simone
Billy Eckstine
Billy Holiday
Sarah Vaughn
Dionne Warwick
Five Blind Boys of Alabama
Five Blind Boys of Mississippi
B.B. King
Muddy Waters
C.L. Franklin
Dinah Washington
Marvin Gaye

What about you? Which artists did your parents play in your house incessantly?

My grandfather introduced me to jazz when I was a baby, but encouraged me to listen to other genres as well. (Secretly, I think he wanted me to be a musician.) His heavy rotation included music by Duke, Count, Monk, Lionel Hampton, Sarah Vaughan and Dr. Donald Byrd. My mother wasn't as into music, but played a lot of Stevie, Aretha and Jim Croce. Thanks to them, my musical taste now falls under the 'mutt' category: soul, jazz, broken beat, hip hop, rock, Afro-Latin, roots reggae, and electronic music (Radiohead, Stereolab, Tortoise, etc).

"I say, play your own way. Don't play what the public wants -- you play what you want and let the public pick up on what you doing -- even if it does take them fifteen, twenty years."
- Thelonious Sphere Monk

VERB,

Your grandfather did you a great service -- your mom too. Those are outstanding musicians!

I'm grateful to that early exposure to great music also. I know it contributed to my creativity and outlook on life.

I LOVE that Monk quote. There was certainly nobody else like him. He was a genius.

Thanks for commenting!
