Poem: High Priestess

High Priestess
by Alicia Benjamin

I’m a painter
My name is High Priestess
I break the glass
Draw no souls in boxes
I shatter
You to
Revelation

  1. Interesting piece. Tell us about it. I'm interested in the thoughts that put this together.

  2. Sondjata,
    Thanks for commenting.

Most of it was a dream. I used some of my dream interpretation skills to compose a piece. But the images were in the dream. I just constructed it in a way that made sense to me. Basically, for me it's saying that I am a spiritual artist, who creates works that cannot be categorized easily. Also, I feel that my work reveals something naked or revelatory about myself or my subjects.
That's the best way I can describe what it means to me.
Of course, I want readers to interpret the piece in their own way.

  3. hmmmm... I asked because it starts with being a painter but then states you "draw no souls." I admit I got stuck there, though that might be me in a literal state of mind (it happens). So the contrasts in such a short piece really got my attention. But the dream thing makes sense since typically we only remember small bits of our dreams.

  4. Sondjata,
In reality, I am not really a painter, but don't many of them draw first -- then paint? Seems like I've seen this type of artwork.
    Do you paint?

  5. Sorry, I didn't mean that you were literaly a painter but rather in the poem you're a painter (by declaration) but there's no "painting' in the poem (in the literal sense). Which I find interesting. Couple that with your dream comment, it makes sense (at least to me). lol
